art
Before yoga came into my world, I studied art at DAAP and at The Art Academy of Cincinnati. Then back in the 1990's, I had a career for a minute as a fine artist. I had a couple of respected art reps who helped me exhibit my work in galleries in Ohio and Kentucky, and placed my work in private and corporate collections in both states. Once my daughter was born in 1995, I took a hard detour into mothering with some graphic design on the side. I worked with a local jazz recording label to create 18 CD packages for their burgeoning musicians. Decades later, my daughter turns 30 this year, I still love the occasional graphic design project, but I'm enjoying creating and showing this latest body of work. I recently exhibited at Millcroft Gallery, and I am looking forward to exhibiting in 2026 in a group show.
This work captures a big love of mid-century modern design that my architect dad introduced me to when I was a kid. When he passed, we inherited his Harry Bertoia dining chairs and Eames fiberglass chair without a clue as to what they were. My affection for him and his sense of style is referenced in these pieces.
These works are super lightweight. They're assembled like a puzzle, similar to a stained glass window, but made from a treasure trove of random hardware, up-cycled materials (cardboard, cork, balsa wood) and found objects I kept from the landfill. I utilized a lot of right angles, a hallmark of the mid-century style that are grounding, stabilizing and calming to the nervous system. (Particularly during the Covid years. Working and teaching exclusively from home meant not getting out much and leaning into being resourceful. Art to the rescue.)
